Did you know that if a downspout gathers water from 500 square feet of roof, an inch of rain produces 300 gallons of water? No matter how you look at it, that's a lot of free and chemical-free water that you can use around your landscape.

I have written several articles with pictures and details of how to make your own and hook them up. There are two ways: 1) An open system where the excess water empties out of the last rain barrel in a series; 2) a closed system where the excess water backs up and empties into the downspout.

This reminds me of a 'wooden car' some nerdy environmentalists made around 20+ years ago for Africa which was supposed to meet their needs better than Land Rovers, Hondas etc. (looked a bit like a wooden 2CV) Where is it now? Would it have been better?

My father's generation did indeed have bamboo racing wheels for bikes but they're no longer with us, probably because they're not as good. I would think they, and the above bike, would go slightly out of shape if in the rain for too long. Slightly out of shape, on a bike, is bad.

There may indeed be bamboo bikes in the future, but mostly eco-status symbols for college lecturers etc.
