Did you know that if a downspout gathers water from 500 square feet of roof, an inch of rain produces 300 gallons of water? No matter how you look at it, that's a lot of free and chemical-free water that you can use around your landscape.

I have written several articles with pictures and details of how to make your own and hook them up. There are two ways: 1) An open system where the excess water empties out of the last rain barrel in a series; 2) a closed system where the excess water backs up and empties into the downspout.

Thanks for your information on rain barrels. I checked the area that we live in and there is also a rain barrel workshop available. Check out this site if you live in the middle Tennessee area: http://www.trc-online.org/TRCConference.html.
